Vikky Wilkes

Vikky’s second show at the Queensland Centre of Photography opens at 5pm on Saturday 5th May and continues until 3rd June.

“The oft-quoted ‘children can be so cruel’ is beautifully illustrated in the concept of the Chinese Burn, a seemingly innocent game kids have played for generations. In addition to the issue of ideologically unsound language, there is something inherently nasty in what is put forth as a simple little twist but in reality finds it origin in torture. It is said that these activities develop important life skills in both the perpetrator and the victim, it just may be several years before benefit may be gained in learning to navigate one’s group of peers become apparent.” (more…)

Saturday Morning Water - Kerry Baylor

Saturday Morning Water is a collection of modern but timeless images from Newcastle’s beach-side Merewether Baths.

“My family practically lived at Merewether Baths. Everything appeared hazy and blurred through stinging saltwater-filled eyes. Mum, Dad and the regulars swam laps … I admired their discipline. I learnt to swim there. I almost drowned there. Safety was the teacher’s matronly bosom and floral bathing cap. I floated and daydreamed. I got my first kiss there … it was a stolen one, underwater. I giggled and gossiped and made lifelong friends. My camera is guided by these memories.”

The exhibition opens at 6pm on Thursday 5th April at the Huw Davies Gallery, Manuka Arts Centre and continues until 29th April. (more…)

Sense of Surroundings - Josh Wodak

Josh Wodak’s Sense of Surroundings is an exhibition of street photography and candid portraiture of Spain from 2010.

“It explores the boundary between sensing and making sense of one’s surroundings. The series concerns the complex interplay between humans and urban landscapes, to depict slithers of understanding from looking amidst the flux of surrounding humans. Human subjects appear to relate to their surrounding environments as seemingly small elements in the compositions, to express the relationship between the photographs as infinitesimal life slices amidst the flux of the wider world.”

The exhibition opens at 6pm on Thursday 15th March at the Huw Davies Gallery, Manuka Arts Centre and continues until 1st April. (more…)

Sekala: ritual and ceremony in Bali – John Boyd Macdonald

Pura Dalem - John Boyd Macdonald

Sekala: ritual and ceremony in Bali is a collection of images made when John and his wife were working for a year in a textile arts foundation in Ubud, Bali. It shows traditional ceremonial life not typically seen by tourist visitors.

“Generations of western artists and diverse other visitors have been captivated by the Balinese people, their culture and landscape. There are many ways for the visitor to see Bali – as a palm-fringed tourist resort, as an exploited third-world economy with a culture under threat, or as some idealised spiritual oasis in an otherwise materialistic world. The reality of course is much more complex and multifaceted – our stereotypes may tell us more about ourselves and our own cultures than about the real Bali.”

The exhibition opens at the Huw Davies Gallery, Manuka Arts Centre at 6pm on Thursday, 23rd February and runs until 11th March. (more…)
