Arches Velin Museum Rag, based on the centuries old Arches Velin, is another new paper from the Canson Infinity range. It shares the same class leading OBA-free whiteness as Rag Photographique and most of what has been said about Rag Photographique applies here. Where Arches Velin Museum Rag differs is with its fine-grained texture and slightly warmer paper colour.
This mould-made, 100% cotton paper comes in weights of 250gsm and 315gsm. The paper measures CIE L*a*b* values of 97.5, -0.1, 1.8 which puts it on the warm side of neutral. The gamut with Ultrachrome HDR inks is possibly the largest I’ve seen for a matte (rag) paper. Prints on this paper seem to jump off the wall. With a pleasing but subtle texture, welcoming warmth, large gamut, good contrast, sufficient weight for mounting flat, excellent viewing characteristics and archival credentials, what’s not to like? I can see Arches Velin Museum Rag becoming a popular paper here at Macquarie Editions.
