Canson Infinity Baryta Prestige

13th October 2017 | Papers

Canson Infinity Baryta Prestige is an updated (and deluxe) version of their popular Baryta Photographique paper. It has however been comprehensively reformulated with an increased weight/thickness (now 340gsm/0.37mm), a cotton and alpha-cellulose base (for better feel/handling), an improved surface sheen which more closely matches that of the inks (for minimal gloss differential) plus a slightly different (and cleaner looking) colour.

Overall it’s a smooth paper with a fine lustre which closely resembles traditional fibre-based darkroom papers. It’s ideal for both black & white and colour. Maximum density and colour gamut are excellent. It won the prestigious TIPA 2017 award for the best inkjet photographic paper.

This is very much a premium paper and will give maximum impact where display conditions allows.

Epson Cold Press Natural

3rd December 2016 | Papers

Epson Cold Press Natural is a sister paper to Epson Hot Press Natural (and its Bright white siblings). As its name implies, it’s a more textured paper but with the same 100% cotton base and 340gsm weight (in sheets). It performs identically to the smoother Hot Press paper with rich blacks.

Macquarie Editions has developed a warm toning for black & white images on this paper for added visual depth. This appealing toning can enhance most image subjects from portraits to landscape. Neutral or Warm toning is available on request.

Hahnemühle Rice Paper

15th November 2013 | Papers

Hahnemühle Rice Paper is a thin, natural white, 100gsm, alpha-cellulose paper with a laid pattern visible when held up to the light. Intended for the reproduction of Sumi-e (East Asian ink wash) paintings its applications range from calligraphy, semi-translucent hangings to portfolio cover sheets. Impressively for such a thin paper it gives up nothing in terms of gamut or maximum density which would also make it useful for lower cost full size proofs. Rice Paper is available in rolls only.

Ilford Galerie Gold Mono Silk

21st June 2013 | Papers

Ilford Galerie Gold Mono Silk is a new paper specifically designed for black & white inkjet printing. It’s a 270gsm, fibre-based paper with a cool white base (L*a*b* coordinates measured at 95.9, 1.2, -4.0). Its surface closely resembles traditional fibre papers used in the darkroom with an air-dried glossy appearance. A very subtle surface texture/stipple adds to its appeal.

Epson Hot Press Natural

9th July 2011 | Papers

Epson Hot Press Natural is a 100% cotton rag paper with a silky smooth surface and natural, warm tone. Its weight is a substantial 330gsm. Its paper white measures 97.3, 0.0, 3.5 (see CIE L*a*b* for a description of these values). It’s a worthy successor to Epson UltraSmooth Fine Art with the newer paper incorporating a superior coating for larger colour gamut and greater Dmax (measured over 1.7 which places it near the top for a rag paper). Images printed on Hot Press Natural are pin sharp and the surface has an attractive velvety appearance. The paper really rewards subjects such as portraits. (more…)

Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth

1st August 2010 | Papers

As its name would imply, Photo Rag Ultra Smooth is a smooth-surfaced, matte, 100% cotton paper. Its weight is 305gsm and it has a bright, neutral white colour achieved with the addition of moderate amounts of OBAs. While not a particularly prepossessing paper, it’s a stunning performer with UltraChrome HDR inks and delivers deep blacks, good contrast and a wide gamut. Indeed it’s a viable alternative to “glossy” papers and will support a wider range of display conditions. (more…)

New papers for black & white

2nd March 2010 | Papers

In recent years various manufacturers have introduced a range of inkjet papers specifically targeting the look and feel of traditional air-dried fibre-based darkroom papers. These come as a welcome alternative to resin-coated offerings. Whilst none of these (in my opinion) are identical to the best fibre-based papers from darkroom days, differences in absolute surface quality are more than compensated for by the range of surfaces on offer and control over tonality from the deepest shadows through to highlights that digital printing allows. Canson Infinity Arches Aquarelle Rag

27th October 2009 | Papers

Canson Infinity Arches Aquarelle Rag is a coated version of the popular traditional watercolour paper and shares its distinctive cold-pressed texture. The noticeable difference in side by side comparisons is its whiter (but still natural white) colour. This mould-made, 100% cotton paper is available in 310gsm and 240gsm weights. As with all papers in the Canson Infinity range, the gamut and density achieved with UltraChrome HDR inks is very satisfying. (more…)

Hahnemühle Sugar Cane

26th July 2009 | Papers

This is another in a continuing series of posts describing just some of the papers offered by Macquarie Editions. Enormous strides are continually being made in the production of new papers from different sources, production techniques and coatings, of which the latest below is a prime example.

Hahnemühle Sugar Cane is a 300gsm paper made from 75% bagasse (a by-product of raw sugar production) and 25% cotton. Along with Hahnemühle Bamboo it represents an attempt to produce papers from environmentally friendly and renewable resources. Even the cotton content of Sugar Cane is sourced from recycling internal waste. (more…)
