Hahnemühle Bamboo

4th January 2009 | Papers

Hahnemühle Bamboo has been quite a popular paper here at Macquarie Editions, in large part due to its uniqueness and versatility. This 290gsm, 0.5mm thick matte paper is made from 90% bamboo and 10% cotton and Hahnemühle touts its feel-good credentials: “Bamboo represents spirituality, naturalness and resource-saving paper production”. It’s a warm paper with a lovely organic texture but its strength is its ability to take ink and deliver really beautiful prints, in B&W and colour.

The paper base has CIE L*a*b* values of 96.1, 0.2, 4.2 which makes it one of the warmest papers around. The gamut with Ultrachrome HDR inks is very large for a matte paper, suffering only in the blues (due to its yellowness). I’ve been able to achieve a Dmax of 1.68 with this paper which is excellent.

I continue to be surprised at how well Bamboo suits a large range of image subjects. For sure, it’s not for everything but it invariably comes up trumps when I go with gut feeling and recommend this to try. If you’re after a unique look for your prints, Bamboo could be just the thing.

Here’s just some images that came out beautifully on this paper:
